Literacy Outreach

05 Apr 2012

School of IndustryWe have an open invitation to work with the School of Industry

While serving and living in Newcastle, we gained valuable insight into the urgent need for English literacy outreach among the children and youth of the area. Many of the children in Kwa-Zulu-Natal grow up speaking a prevalent language other than English (primarily Zulu and Africans). However, in South Africa, children are required not only to learn English, but to learn to read in English.

According to the most recent figures from the Kwa-Zulu-Natal Department of Education, the literacy rate among sixth grade children stands at a meager 39%. To compound the problem, schools are poorly equipped. The general consensus among education experts in the country is that the low literacy rates are directly related to poverty. With an estimated poverty rate of 70%, higher than any other province in South Africa, the situation in Kwa-Zulu-Natal is especially dire.

We believe God is calling us to partner with pastors, schools and communities to provide reading education to the poor and disadvantaged in Northern Kwa-Zulu-Natal. We have an open invitation to work with the School of Industry to not only provide literacy education to the reform school and behavioral challenged students, but to read the Bible and pray with them! Additionally we are developing a mobile literacy program (BAC or Book Adventure Club – see our logo below) that will allow us to reach primary aged learners in poverty stricken villages and townships. God is opening up doors for us to share the life giving Gospel of Jesus Christ through these reading education.

Soccer Rules!!

02 Apr 2012

It didn’t take us long before we realized that among the Zulu children and youth, soccer is king in South Africa. Seemingly everywhere you went, there were children playing soccer; in parks, vacant lots and in the streets. We were amazed to learn that there were virtually NO formal soccer competition, leagues or development programs offered through schools or in the community at large.

God has put on our heart to use this void to reach youth with the Gospel message. By conducting outreach programs through the beautiful game of soccer, we can reach children in the next five years. God has led us to create the United Youth Soccer Association of Northern Natal.

Through this initiative, we are partnering with local evangelical pastors and others to develop formal soccer competition through strategically place leagues while also offering outreach activities/camps for both players and coaches. We have 2 leagues and 2 camps starting in January 2013 and two more leagues set to start in February.

Teachers with Deena

Our primary focus when we arrived was to discover what God had for us to do in South Africa. Our first contacts were with Shekinah Christian Academy and the Newcastle Baptist Church. Deena assisted the school in developing a comprehensive reading program for grades 1st through 3rd. Deena also developed a remedial reading program to assist learners at all grade levels with reading proficiency. Dan helped out with counseling students, P.E. and recess. We found the teachers (pictured right) to be extremely professional, knowledgeable and wonderful to work with. We have a special place in our hearts for them.

Reflecting on South Africa

10 Mar 2012

As our vision trip to South Africa comes to an end we have gained a fresh first hand perspective of the country and a far greater understanding of why God has called us here.

Before we departed on this journey, many asked why South Africa.  One gentleman even questioned why we would go the richest country in Africa when there were so many other countries on the continent whose needs were far greater?. Many in the West think of South Africa as an exception to other countries is Africa. Basically  speaking they consider it the same as a first world western democracy that just so happens to be located in southern Africa.

The fact is South Africa is a very complex and diverse society that cannot really be ladled in regards to a world class. One of the people and a great man of  God I have gotten to know since being here put it this way. Our country has first world cities and the rest is third world. After being here and observing for over two months I tend to agree with that assumption. Take here in the town of Newcastle proper.  Everything here including the shopping, roads, homes, hospitals, commercial buildings etc. reminds me very much of what you would find in any western civilized town. However, it is when you venture out a few kilometres you get a whole different perspective.

There is a densely populated area just outside of Newcastle which houses about 300,000 people, everywhere you look you see abject poverty and realize quickly you just entered a different world. Additionally, the countryside throughout this region is dotted and consumed by makeshift townships and camps. Many of these places are full of dwellings that would not pass any building codes common in the western world. Also much of these areas are void of basic necessities including, running water and electricity. Let me contrast this. The town of Newcastle proper has a population of about 17,000 people, the poor areas I just described are home to nearly 4000,000.  This only includes this immediate area around Newcastle. I can only imagine what the numbers are like nearer the big cities and in the vast rural areas of the country.

Before we came here, we really felt like God was telling us He was sending us to a place that has been neglected and what we found was an area that was ripe for the hope of the Gospel. The need here is vast and seemingly never ending and we are privileged that God has called us to this place at this time. Even though we are looking forward to going home, seeing loved ones, share our adventure and articulate the need. We also take back with us an excruciating burden for the people here and cannot wait to get back.

Praise the Lord!!!

Had a wonderful Sunday yesterday at Wycombe Farm Village.  Deena was supposed to present to the children for Sunday School however, There were only a few children so she presented to the whole church.  There were probably 15 children at this outdoor church service. Deena presented a simple message using props to show how a black stained heart can come white through a relationship wi Christ. Even though the message is geared toward children one of the adult ladies came forward with tears in her  eyes wanting to accept Jesus. We got the entire service on video and will post on facebook/youtube in a day or two. The amazing thing was, the prop failed but the message went through. The harvest field is truly ripe and we are humbled God chose us as the laborers.

Also Deena has been working fast and furious and is starting to see the fruits of her labor in regards to her service to Shekinah Christian Academy. The reading curriculum she has been working hard to implement has been accepted by the Department of Education here. She also has developed work sheets to go with the curriculum and has implemented remedial reading groups that are starting to show real results with students who have reading challenges. Please pray that the school will find a volunteer to take over the remedial reading group until we return hopefully by the end of the year.

Please stay tuned, more updates to come as the week goes by. So much happening as our time runs short!!

Busy and Exciting Times

25 Feb 2012

Two weeks to go here in Newcastle South Africa on this particular trip. So many exciting things are happening and lots to do before we pack up and go two weekends from now.

tonight we are having the three teachers and their families from Shekinah Christian Academy over for Dinner to thank them for their service.

Deena and I are having lunch with Pastor Seeva Pillay of the Evangelical Bible Church after we attend services at Newcastle Baptist Church tomorrow. Pastor Seeva has been pivotal in connecting us with schools and ministries in the area that provide numerous ministry opportunities. He is alos my major partner on developing/planning the soccer ministry.  After lunch tomorrow he is taking us back out to Wycomb Farm Village where Deena will provide a Sunday school lesson to the children there. This will also be a site for at least two soccer teams when our league is up and running in early 2013.

Also next week we have may an opportunity to acquire soccer uniforms (Jersey, socks, shorts) for the kids at the School of Industries who play games with local schools once in a while. However, they have no uniforms and most of them play with bare feet. I attended a game last week and they had borrowed jersey's and played a team that was fully equipped.  Please pray that we will be able to supply them with the uniforms before we leave Newcastle on March 10.This will be a big step in building trust and showing these kids the love of Christ and letting them know we really do care and are committed to them. Also pray that we will be able to obtain good quality second hand shoes when we return to the States that we can ship to them in a couple months time. Deena is also looking into reading curriculum that will best serve the kids at the School of Industries  most of whom cannot read English. We hope to meet with the staff members at the school before we leave with examples and seek their input. Once we have something we all agree on Deena will work to acquire the curriculum when we return and will implement it and train the staff when we come back to South Africa.

Please keep us in your prayers as we try to finish strong here!!!!

Open Door

18 Feb 2012

On Thursday Feb 16 Pastor Seeva and I met with the Vice Principal and four others at the School of Industries here in Newcastle. This is a State operated school that educates high school age students with serious behavioral issues and those who have committed serious crimes but are not old enough for the adult prison system. There are a total of 25 students. I presented our vision with the soccer ministry at the forefront. However, as we started talking it became obvious there are other opportunities for ministry.  We were told that most of the learners there had never really had any education and very few of them could read and write English. Both Pastor Seeva and essentially at that pint volunteered Deena since that was her area of expertise. Also when I explained to them I had a background in career counseling they indicated that was also a great need. As I began to present I was mindful that this was a state school so even though I told them we were missionaries and  we would be sharing the hope of Christ with students, I was trying to convey this with utmost diplomacy.  Towards the end of the presentation one of the counselors that was present said you speak of sharing Jesus but would you also be willing to pray with the learners because that is something they need desperately.  That gave us a wide open door and needless to say we walked right through. The (Hindu) Vice Principal then indicated to us that he wanted us to share the Bible with the students and asked if there was a way we could provide "nice" Bibles for them that they could study. He also said he believed that these kids needed God and that was their only hope if they were to become good citizens on the outside. It was just an incredible meeting, we are so excited what God is doing and humbled that He has chose us for this opportunity. Deena and I are going to the site on Monday the 20th to meet and spend time with the students to begin the process of getting to know them and assess needs. I made sure I reminded all present that we were leaving on March 10 and probably would not be able to make it back for a few months.  The Vice Principal said that was fine but he wanted us to meet with the learners to start the process so we could hit the ground running when we came back.  He also basically told us we full access to the students and the school would print any materials we needed such as devotionals, reading lessons, counseling guides, etc. Please pray for these kids and the Holy Spirit's guidance as we seek clarity and vision for this important ministry.

Preparing for Full Time Ministry, By Dan Simmons

16 Feb 2012

Our time here for this vision trip is coming to close in a hurry as so it seems. We only have three weeks left in Newcastle and we have a lot to accomplish before we leave. Deena is working frantically on ensuring the reading curriculum is in place prior to March 10, our last day in Newcastle. Please pray for her, the teachers and administration as they work together to make this happen.

I am spending my time developing the soccer ministry organization and preparing us for full time ministry here. It is a lot of work but what a labor of joy!!

Please pray for appointments I have this week and that they will be informative and extremely productive. Pastor Seeva Pillay and I are meeting with an administrator of the School for Industries today. They have invited us to come in on a weekly basis to minister to their 30-40 students. This is essentially a juvenile detention center who houses troubled youth from all over South Africa. Even though it is a state run school we are going to have opportunities to present the gospel, both through the soccer ministry and through individual counseling sessions with the students.

I will also be meeting with two pastors this week to discuss how the soccer ministry will serve them in their efforts to evangelize their communities.

Please pray that both Deena and can complete the work we needed to set the foundation for us to come back, hopefully by the end of the year. We are moving forward at a rapid pace to serve here long term. Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will be our guiding force and God will receive the full measure of glory in all that done through our work here.

God's Work is Usually not Easy but Always Rewarding.

11 Feb 2012

In John 6:28-29 the disciples asked Jesus what work the Father had for them. Jesus answered saying The work of the Father is to believe in the One He sent. On January 30, 2012 after being here four weeks, found out first hand that God's work is not always easy as we endured probably the most trying time in our lives. That morning my wife and I were involved in a jarring car accident (our two sons were not in the car). Later that day our son Micah who contracted a stomach ailment and became very dehydrated. He had to be rushed to the hospital and was there for four nights. These unforeseen incidents basically brought our ministry to a quick halt for an entire week. There was a point we started questioning our calling and in our weakest moments we thought of packing it in and going back home. However, we quickly realized that God has called us to this place and he was going to use us to bring glory to Himself. God never said serving Him would be easy and any setbacks we endure in this world are minute and insignificant when compared to God's eternal plan. We prayed that His word would find fettle ground (as Jesus taught with the parable of the sower) and that we would persevere and be productive till the end in accordance with His eternal will and calling. This week as I researched and began to write the constitution and rules for the soccer ministry we are starting I could not help but think how much of a privileged it was for God to call us to this place at this time and trust us with such an important work. Even with the immense challenges we have faced since we set out on this journey January 1st. I can't imagine anything being more rewarding than to work exclusively for our eternal Father till our last breath not matter what misfortunes this life may bring. We so dearly appreciate your prayers for His provision as we serve out the rest of this trip and as we prepare to come back to serve full time! Dan Simmons
